MEDDPICC vs SPICED vs BANT: which qualification method fits your team?

What each method asks

BANT came out of IBM and checks four things: Budget, Authority, Need and Timeline. It is quick to learn and quick to apply, which makes it useful for early screening and high-volume sales.

SPICED was developed by Winning by Design for recurring-revenue businesses. It covers Situation, Pain, Impact, Critical Event and Decision. Its strength is that it ties the deal to the impact the customer expects, which carries into onboarding and renewal.

MEDDPICC grew out of MEDDIC, first used at PTC in the 1990s. It covers Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Paper process, Identify pain, Champion and Competition. It is the most demanding of the three and the most protective in long enterprise cycles.

How to choose

  1. Look at your average deal: cycle length, number of people involved, and whether legal or procurement gets involved.
  2. Match the method to the hardest deals you need to win, not the easiest ones.
  3. Keep the criteria short enough that every seller can apply them on every deal.
  4. Write down what evidence counts for each criterion. “Champion identified” means nothing without a name and a confirmed action.

Where teams go wrong

The common failure is not picking the wrong method. It is applying the method unevenly. One seller marks the economic buyer as confirmed after a single call, another waits for a meeting. The forecast then reflects who owns the deal, not what the buyer actually said.

This is the gap Mira by ValueOrbit is built for. Mira checks each deal against your chosen method, MEDDPICC, SPICED, BANT or your own, flags the criteria that lack evidence, and drafts the next step for the seller to approve.

Frequently asked questions

Is MEDDPICC better than SPICED?

Neither is better in general. MEDDPICC is stronger for enterprise buying processes; SPICED is stronger at tying the deal to customer outcomes.

Can we combine qualification methods?

Yes. Many teams use BANT to screen leads, then SPICED or MEDDPICC once a deal is real.

How long does it take to roll out a new qualification method?

Training takes days. Consistent use takes a quarter of weekly deal reviews, or a tool that checks every deal for you.

Does a qualification method help forecasting?

Yes, if the criteria require evidence. A deal with confirmed criteria is far less likely to slip than one with assumed criteria.
